It’s not uncommon to start feeling sluggish around this time of the year. Not only is cold weather setting in around much of the world which makes us want to curl up inside, but also most of us have been indulging on plenty of baked goods and treats over the holidays.
Thankfully, adding a few extra things into your diet can make you perk right back up! In today’s blog, we’ll be going over some superfoods you can indulge in this winter to keep your health on the up and up.
What Is A Superfood?
While we do have a “Super-Man” supplement stack, there is no such thing as a supernatural or super powerful food. That is to say, there is no food that can completely banish your kryptonite. But there are foods that are jam-packed with nutrients and antioxidants that when eaten along with a relatively healthy diet and exercise regimen can boost your results and improve your overall health.
Superfoods To Eat This Week
Dark Greens
Kale, spinach, collard greens, and arugula are all examples of superfoods that contain plenty of zinc, calcium, folate, and magnesium, to name a few. They are also full of antioxidants, a compound that inhibits oxidation and blocks harmful free radicals.
There are a few easy ways to get leafy greens into your diet. One way is to blend them into a fruit smoothie. We would recommend blending a handful or two of leafy greens with frozen berries, a banana, ice, and a scoop of our fruit-flavored pre-workout powder. We think that the tropical fruit flavor mixes well with dark greens and helps to mask the flavor.
If you don’t want liquified vegetables, toss a couple handfuls of greens with a 1:1 ratio of olive oil and balsamic vinegar. To sweeten it up, add a tablespoon of honey to your dressing and top your salad with some Craisins.
Fish With Omega-3’s
Fish like salmon and tuna are great sources of omega-3 fatty acids. These fatty acids have been shown to reduce your risk of heart disease. Not only does fish have healthy fats in it, but it also is full of lean protein, vitamin B-12, vitamin D, selenium, and other vitamins.
You can buy your salmon or tuna fresh, frozen, or canned and still get the same great benefits! This is a superfood that is great to incorporate into a couple meals a week.
Avocados
Like fish, avocados are full of healthy fats. The type of fat they contain is called monosaturated fat, which can reduce your risk of cancer and heart disease. Avocados also are high in fiber and showcase over a dozen important vitamins and minerals including potassium, lutein, folate, and B vitamins.
Turn a fresh avocado into guacamole (hint: garlic and tomatoes are also superfoods — so when Chipotle tells you guac costs extra, you know it’s worth it), spread it on some toast, or just eat it with a spoon! Avocados also make smoothies super creamy, so throw one into your morning smoothie with a scoop of our pure whey protein powder. Just be sure to remove the pit!
Berries
As you throw an avocado and your leafy greens into your morning whey protein smoothie, why not throw a handful of berries in as well? Berries are jam-packed with antioxidants, fiber, vitamin C, potassium, and other important vitamins and minerals. Some of the most nutrient-dense berries include blueberries, raspberries, goji berries, strawberries, and acai berries.
Green Tea
Green tea has been trusted for thousands of years as a healthy beverage to sip that has just enough caffeine to get you through the end of the day. Like some of the other superfoods on this list, green tea is rich in antioxidants in addition to having anti-inflammatory properties.
To get the benefits of green tea, you can either brew up a cup of pre-packaged green tea or utilize the power of our thermogenic fat burner, Inferno. Inferno not only has powerful green tea extract, but it also has other fat-burning food extracts like caffeine and cayenne.
